Top 5 Wednesday - February 2016

February 3 - Biggest Badasses

  1. Shot Gun Suzie, Nightside Series, Simon R Green
  2. Archeron, Dark Hunter Universe, Sherrilyn Kenyon
  3. Bekka Cooper, Diana, Alanna, and Kel, Tortal, Tamora Pierce
  4. Jack Sawyer, The Talisman
  5. Jason Bourne, Robert Ludlum

February 10 - Books You Were Spoiled For *what spoiled them

  1. Divergent (only book 1), Veronica Roth *movie trailer
  2. The Great Gatsby, F Scott Fitzgerald *people
  3. Twilight, Stephanie Meyer *people
  4. The Lord of the Rings, JRR Tolkien *films
  5. Immortals Tamora Pierce & DarkHunters, Sherrilyn Kenyon
The first four books where (as I am sure you know) super popular and then they where all made into movies. The final books where spoiled but they weren't at the same time, both are book collections that have multiple series within themselves, in reading other novels I acquired information that revealed the outcomes of other books

February 17 - Best Suggested Books You Loved (books recommended to you)

  2. The Kite Runner, Khaled Hosseini
  3. Bloody Jack Series, LA Meyer

TBR - May 2016

I am going to be making this months list really short, I have no idea how much time I am going to be able to dedicate to reading and would rather be pleasantly surprised vs disappointed in what I get through.

*I have all of these on audiobook I have been listening over reading a lot lately.

Top 5 Wednesday - January 2016

Will be Publishing T5W on the final Wednesday of every month, I just can't seem to find the time to keep up with it all each week.

January 6 - Favorite Fandoms (books, tv, movies, etc)

  1. Hannibal, Thomas Harris
  2. Harry Potter, JK Rowling
  3. A Game of Thrones, George R Martin
  4. Jason Bourne, Robert Ludlum
  5. Twilight, Stephanie Meyer
All of my choices are books, movies and Tv shows, I organized the list from my most favourite to my least favourite.
While I have not seen the Tv series that goes with A Game Of Thrones, I have read all the books and seen all the films that go with the other 4.
*Twilight is the exception to my choices,  I am part of the fan base for the other 4 choices. I am NOT a Twilight fan (although I will admit I enjoyed the first book). The Twilight Fans made the list because they are so hardcore. I find the bickering that goes on within the group - Pro Jacob, Pro Edward, Book 1, 2, 3, 4, ect. - and the fighting that goes on between "twihards" and "anti-twilighters" to be hilarious. I don't think I have ever seen another group of people who are 100% a "diveded united front". Reminds me of a disfunctional family.

January 13 -Favorite Self-Published Books

I thought that this topic was going to be a piece of cake. I mean tons of novels are self-published right? erm no...
  1. 50 Shades of Grey, EL James
Sadly this is seems to be my only self-published novel, and of all the book it had to be 50 Shades (of which I am moderately ashamed to have even read)

January 20 - Favorite Buzz Words (words used to describe a book that is a guarantee buy for you)

  1. Gory
  2. Repulsive
  3. Twisted
  4. Shocking
  5. Taboo
These words hold even more weight if they are "spoken by"  Stephen King or Fearnet.
The third indicator is a Bram Stoker award, books that have all three are deadly.

January 27 - Disappointing Eye Candy (books that looked beautiful, but the inside did not match up to the outside)

Before I start to seem two faced, I want to clarify that these are not my most hated books. I honestly liked the novels. But the T5W title is "Disappointing  Eye Candy" . Therefore judging them based on the covers they would have all been 5/5 stars but in reality they fell a little short.
  1. Emerald Green, Kerstin Geir
  2. The Twilight Series, Stephenie Meyer
  3. Blood and Chocolate, Annette Curtis Klause
  4. The Nightmare Affair, Arkwell Academy, Mindee Arnet
  5. Wintergirls, Laurie Halse Anderson

Series Review - Divergent

The bookworms archenemy ; the popular books you HAVE to read, that you know are SO over hyped and media inflated (especially when there are movies involved), that you want to read but don't at the same time. Then you read the darn thing and its only OK. It's the OK that I really have a problem with, I am very rarely in the "grey area" with novels, I am a love it or hate it kind of person. All of the YA trilogies lately have been falling in the grey area and its driving me crazy.

Divergent Trilogy
Veronica Roth

Dystopian/ YA
Easy Read

Divergent
5 stars

Introducing our setting, five factions based on the five evils that cause war. Abegnation that believe it is selfishness, Erudite that believe it is ignorance, Dauntless that believe it is cowardice, ect. Amity and Candor are the other two factions. Four factions live together in a  city, Amity the fifth lives just outside the fence. The factions do not interact with each other on base levels, they do not work together, go to school together, or get married outside of their own faction. When the teens of the city turn 16 they take an aptitude test and then there is a choosing ceremony, each person is born into a faction, the choosing ceremony is the only time when a person can decide to change factions. Hence the name during the choosing ceremony each person will choose what Faction they want to devote their lives to *the Factionless also live within the city, they are essentially the homeless. To be Factionless is considered a fate worse than death.
Tris is our main character, she was born Abegnation but her aptitude test is inconclusive which makes her Divergent (she could join Dauntless, Erudite or Abegnation equally). Divergence is dangerous, although the majority people don't know of its existence and those who do don't know why it is dangerous. Tris becomes Dauntless where she meets Four who has secrets of his own... and suddenly the world as they know it begins to unravel at the seams.

I don't have much to say about this book, its a good read, its not original, there are movies. Its a dystopian YA.

Top 5 Wednesday - Favorite Character Tropes

Top 5 Wednesday

Favorite Character Tropes

July 29th

*a character trope are things you see often in books, maybe sometimes they get redundant or are overused (especially in ya) but you can't help but love them. A couple examples
- one girl against the government
- two best friends falling in love

  • The Love Triangle
    • Two guys, one new flame, one old friend, + the girl
    • Bad boy, Shy boy combo
  • Anti Heroes
    •  Bad boys who are good men
  • The childhood and or past trauma
    • that is the root of all things evil
    • the reason why a character is so determined to "do good"
    • how the other characters react
    • maybe its something just the reader and the main character know
  • That side character you always relate with or crush on
    • For me its often the big muscly guy who has a : always had the same girlfriend or is always single with no one really interested in him
  • Destiny. Fate. Signs ect
    • This is a hard one to put down because there is so much love hate. Some books have it written in perfectly and with others I just find it unnecessary and frustrating.
    • Love should never be destined
    • Birthday transformations are a grey area
    • Prophecies are a favourite of mine
    • Birth Marks are a grey area

Top 5 Wednesday - Anticipated Pre-Orders For the Rest of the Year

Modifying this -- >Anticipated Releases for 2015
July 15 2015

I don't own any books and am not currently buying books which is why I am modifying this question.

These books are in order from my most anticipated to my least anticipated. I am so behind with so many series that I want to start or finish, that most of my anticipated books are part of an existing series, companion series, or from a known author. But I am not really waiting on any of these novels (such as I have only read the first lunar chronicles novel, Winter will probably be released before I catch up...)

  1. Winter, The Lunar Chronicles november
  2. DragonBane, Sherrilyn Kenyon august
  3. A Whole New World, Liz Braswell september, I am on the fence with this book, it could be great, it could be awful, it might just be a rip off of all the other retellings that are around.
  4. The Sword of Summer, Rick Riordan october, starting a new series based on the Icelandic gods
  5. Autumn Thorns, Yasmine Galnorm

Book Review - NOS4A2

NOS4A2
Joe Hill

8.5 Stars
686 Pages
horror/ thriller / supernatural /

Vic McQueen is a finder, using her bike she can almost always find anything that has been lost. Welcome to the world of inscapes, where Miss Maggie's tiles can answer any question, and  the immortal Charlie Man hides away his stolen children in the magical inscape of Christmas-land, a peaceful world filled with all the joys of christmas all year round a paradise... as long as you don't mind the fine print.

My goal for this year was to read at least one Stephen King book every month, but they started to get repetitive. So to change things up a bit I said one adult horror novel much like King each month and the next best thing to King? His son Joe! I find Joe Hill to be an easier quicker version of Kings novels with a lot of the same writing style (understandably). I raced through Horns last month (and have not yet watched the movie...still) and decided to grab this next.

This is one of those reads that I cannot say enough good things about. I loved this book, such a great read I had hard time putting it down. I really felt for these characters; liked the good guys, loathed the bad guys, associated with Vic and her family. I loved Lou's character to pieces. I was close to tears when Hooper died. Despite the fact that we jumped around in time a bit it was easy to fallow, pages 404 & 511 referenced Derry and Pennywise (it, 11/22/63, insomnia - King), The Tree house of the mind (Horns -Hill), The True Knot (Dr. Sleep - King) I was in my element knowing I had read all these associated novels!

If you liked this I would recommend

The Movie/Book Dilemma - Book and Movie

Read the Book & Watched the Movie
Stand Alones
Not all of these movies / books are honestly stand alone's but if I haven't seen/read both I am considering them as such.
  • The Help, Kathryn Stockett
  • The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe, CS Lewis
  • The Da Vinci Code, Dan Brown
  • Eragon, Christopher Paolini
  • Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Shakespear
  • Hamlet, Shakespear
  • Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Road Dahl
  • A Series of Unfortunate Events, Lemony Snickett
  • My Sisters Keeper, Jodi Picoult
  • The Lovely Bones, Alice Sebold
  • The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy
  • The Great Gatsby, F Scott Fitzgerald
  • James and the Giant Peach, Road Dahl
  • The Green Mile, Stephen King
  • Carrie, Stephen King
  • The Lightning Thief, Rick Riordan
  • The Shinning, Stephen King This book had nothing to do with the movie and vice versa I would love them to do a remake using the actual story
  • The Crucible, Arthur Miller
  • Because of Winn-Dixie, Kate Dicamillo
  • The Bone Collector, Jeffery Deaver
Series

  • Hannibal Series, Thomas Harris - Red Dragon, Hannibal Rising, The Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal
  • Harry Potter Series, JK Rowling My favourite is the first book movie combo, I did find that as the books got longer of course the movies just didn't or couldn't include all those details, but they still did an incredible job getting everything to match. I really found that the actors matched the characters in the book (huge pet peeve there, how many times has a blonde actor played dark haired character?!!?!?). I read all of these books before I saw any of the movies and I still haven't seen the last three movies yet

These Have Books and Movies but... Do They Count?
  • The Cat in the Hat, Dr Seuss
  • How the Grinch, Dr Seuss
  • Winnie the Pooh, AA Milne
  • Horton Hears a Who, Dr Seuss
  • The Lorax, Dr Seuss
This is far from a complete list I didn't realize when I started this post that there was going to be such a long list.

The Movie/Book Dilemma - Book before Movie

Read the Book but Haven't Watched the Movie

I am not a big movie watcher, I sometimes go on kicks where I will be watching movies pretty often but for me it is always a social thing. I don't just watch movies on my own, if I am on my own id rather be reading. The main reason why I haven't watched these however is a lack of desire to do so, I would watch them if someone else wanted to but none of these would be my picks

  • New Moon, Eclipse, Breaking Dawn,
  • Memoirs of a Geisha,
  • Percy Jackson, Rick Riordan
  • The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins
  • The Kite Runner, Kalhed Hossini
  • The Secret Garden, Frances Burett Hodges
  • Inkheart, Cornelia Funk
  • Blood and Chocolate,
  • The City of Ember,
  • The Witches, Road Dahl
  • Anne Frank, The Diary of a Young Girl
  • Midsummer Nights Dream, Shakespear
  • Into the Wild, Jon Krakauer
  • Brave New World, Aldous Huxley

  • I would watch a remake

  • Christine, Stephen King
  • Cujo, Stephen King
  • It, Stephen King

  • Going to Watch These, Just Haven't Got There Yet
    • Horns, Joe Hill

This is not a complete list by any means.. I started this as a side list to go with the movie/book pairings I have seen and it got a little out of control... oh well!

    Book Review - Abandoned

    Abandoned
    by Anya Peters

    child abuse/ homelessness/ sexual abuse/

Anya grows up in a physically/mentally and emotionally abusive home in England. Adopted by her aunt, hated by her uncle (who eventually beings to sexually abuse her), her biological mother lives in Ireland with there elderly parents, acting as caretaker for them. No one in Ireland knows of her existence because she was born out of an affair between her mother and a married man (who is still married with children), different social stigmas than today she would have been a huge shame... Anya is pushed into growing up too fast, and eventually finds herself homeless living in her car on the streets of London.
    Anya's Original Blog
    Anya's Newer Wordpress Blog

I was disgusted by every decision made by an adult in this book. Beginning with her mother Kathy, choosing to leave her to live with her uncle who was very outspoken with not wanting her there. Her aunt for making a definitive decision with anything, choosing not to force Kathy to take her, letting her be damaged day after day with the drinking, yelling mental home that she was living in. I understand that it was a different day and age but that both Brendan and Kathy chose to be part of her life in such selfish ways (them deciding to be part time parents was more detrimental than good from what I could tell. That her uncle was sent to prison for less than 5 years after molesting her at age 7 and raping her at age 9 until she was almost 12, he raped her sisters who as far as I can tell said nothing, the oldest girl could have saved the younger two if she had just spoken up (I realize thats next to impossible to do but to save your younger sisters?)... When reading this type of novel I have come to expect a certain type of emotional roller coaster; experience pity, sympathy, anger, outrage, sorrow, disgust and hope alternately.

*this is my blog, and my review please respect my right to an opinion even if you don't feel it is the right opinion to have.

This is my first experience with anger towards the author (which I know is a terrible thing to say and I hate to write it but honestly..) I felt a little bit irritated when she spoke of depending on Brendan after the first couple months that he had not delivered on his promises. It is definitively my perspective and personality kicking in there, I just couldn't believe after everything that she was so willing to put her life on the line like that. As she spiralled downwards I was both distraught and attempting to be understanding while I completely lost my patience. Unfortunately by the end of the novel I was distanced from Anya almost entirely. I don't question that she had rights and reasons to act the way she did but the times that literally threw away all the help offered infuriated me.

    Book Review - Ella Enchanted

    Ella Enchanted
    By Gail Carson Levine

    7 Stars
    Fairy Tale/ Retelling/ YA/ Grade School/
    Easy Read

So I have seen this movie (which I thought was alright but not great) and I had no idea that there was also a book. I have to say that the story in the novel is quite a bit different and much more enjoyable than the movie. I wish the movie fallowed the books story closer because it would have made it way better. I was also unaware of the fact that this is a Cinderella retelling, which seems to be the theme of the month. This is the authors first children's book, I won't be seeking out anything else by her any time soon although goodreads informed me there are other retelling books for people who would be interested. I found this book very sweet and cute but the writing style was too young for me to want anything else in the same style. Very quick read for anyone with children, or I recommend this for a one sitting, light easy reading novella (good for a read-a-thon).

Top 5 Wednesday - Things on your Bookshelf that Aren't Books

    Top 5 Wednesday

    July 8th
Things on your Bookshelf that Aren't Books
So I find doing this top 5 wednesday a little bit funny because I don't honestly have a "bookshelf" 90+% of the time, I just so happen to have one right now coincidentally but it doesn't have any books on it other than my library books because I don't own any books... Its more just a shelf then I guess? Which is what i normally don't have?

    1. Supplements, I have one shelf entirely dedicated to protein powder, multivitamins, samples, progressive vegegreens, phytoberry, protein shakers, pre workout....

    2. Yoga Mat, nicely rolled up and held together with an elastic
    3. My steel toed work boots on the bottom shelf
    4. My snowboard boots also on the bottom self
    5. cat litter

    Book Review - Devil's Child

    Devil's Child
    by Jerry Coyne

    277 Pages

Child abuse is not a pleasant topic to discus, but I think that it is a necessary topic that isn't spoken of enough. I think it is because of this division between the everyday person and these damaged souls that these kinds of abusers continue to exist. Jerry is three months old when he is abandoned by his parents who are able but unwilling to care for him and his five older siblings, all six children are given to the Catholic Children's Society, the first four years at the Nazareth house for Jerry are how every child should be raised, he was loved, nurtured and properly cared for. Sister Dominic enters the home, immediately deciding that Jerry is the Devil's Child she beast and abuses him. She convinces other nuns of house Nazareth that it is their duty to cast the devil out of him thought nightly beatings, sleep deprivation and mental/verbal torture. By the time he is 12 he is sent to Knossington Grange a boarding school for wayward boys he has been taught that the beatings are his fault, no one wants him and no one loves him. He begins to self harm and contemplates suicide. At Knossington he is sexually abused until the age of 15, at 16 he leaves the school attempting to begin his life, given no skills and little education he is homeless until he is taken in by Arthur a kind, generous man from his childhood. He is 28 when he first tells his story to a solicitor, after attempting and almost succeeding at suicide.

Below is more discussion and detail about the book

Books Read in One Day Tag

Books Read in a Single Day

I had originally titled this books read in one sitting but changed it to books I finished in one day or a single day.
Obviously I mean each individual book for an individual day I did not read all of these on the same day.
Often I will start a book in the morning read for about half an hour right when I wake up and then pick it up again at the end of my day just before bed and finish it. I have also read quite a few books in one sitting if it is a smaller novella.
Many of these I have finished on vacations so while driving for a road trip, waiting for a plane, or when I have had lots of extra time on a vacation and just lay about doing what I want; which is reading on the beach.

These books aren't in any order and I have included a few that I reread in one sitting (that I didn't read in one sitting or day the first time over) most of these don't have very many pages and or are junior high reads that I have picked up as an adult.
    • Savage, Richard Laymon
    • The Lovely Bones, Alice Sebold
    • Living Dead Girl, Elizabeth Scott
    • Rakkety Tam, Brian Jaques
    • Twilight, Stephenie Meyer
    • A Midsummer Nights Scream, R L Stine
    • Bad Girls Don't Die, Katie Alender
    • The Summoning, Kelly Armstrong
    • The Hunger Games, Suzanne Collins
    • Skinny, Donna Cooner *My vacation to Vancouver Island left me with several hours of free time that I spent in the library located conveniently close to the gym (like right next door)
    • A Stolen Life, Jaycee Dugard
    • If I Stay & Where She Went *weekend marathon reading
    • The Cry of the Icemark
    • Redwall, Brian Jaques

Series Review - The Chemical Garden Trilogy - Wither

    The Chemical Garden Trilogy
    By Laura Destefano

    Wither
    Dystopian/ Post Apocalyptic/ YA / Polygamy/
    Easy Read
    First Person Narrative
    7.5 Stars

I went into this book blind, I didn't look at goodreads, I didn't read the synopsis, and while I had heard the name I didn't have a clue what the book was about. I had also never heard of the author Laura Destefano.
I had my doubts about this book when I figured out that it was a dystopian which I love, but has been overdone so much with YA as of late. I was concerned that this would be another spawn of the Hunger Games. This novel had a much different tone, there was no finger to point for the situation, the lack of rebellion by single figure (small group) against government/ impossibly big powerful authority figure was refreshing.  The world captivated me, it was beautiful and tragic. I felt for the characters although a (small) downfall of this book was my inability to relate to the main character Rhine. I occasionally found her "voice" whiney is a very immature childish way. I found the author repeated information about her past and brother a few to many times (it would have been one thing if it was new information each time but it wasn't... for instance I learned that her lost twin brother Rowan loved to fish about half a dozen to a dozen times). I find it very frustrating that she never told Linden more about her past as I feel that would have made some very interesting plot twists. This was a little bit predicable in some places but the ending was a surprise. I will definativly be continuing this series.
