RL Stine's Debut into Adult Novels. I have been a fan of Goosebumps for years, my dad read them to me when I was a child. I was hoping that his adult novels would bring the same high standards.
Book Overview
24 year old Sara returns to Freewood, the small town where she went to college, running away from her crazed ex boyfriend in New York City. Just another sleepy little town where nothing much happens. Until the gruesome murders begin, animalistic attacks that leave bodies gutted and torn limb from limb. With no evidence left behind the police are at a loss. But someone in Freewood has a secret and there may be more truth to those silly little superstations; only old people believe in than you would have ever guessed. Time to brush up on your rhymes and rules if you want to survive.
Review
Detailed descriptions of the gore, a touch of romance, a dash sex and a few curse words are really the only difference between this book and Goosebumps. I was disappointed in how simple the writing was, the story line was good but there was missed potential. The biggest downfall of them all was the main character. I loathed Sara, and spent much of the read muttering "don't do it you stupid girl" to myself. Another one of those books with so much potential, such a shame to see it fall flat.
Will be giving some of RL Stines other adult novels a try, in hopes that later attempts have become a touch more sophisticated.
