Book Review - A Madness So Discreet

A Madness so Discreet
Mindy McGinnis

376 pages
7.5 stars
Historical / Mystery / Mental Illness

This was a book that I saw on so many booktuber's channels for a while there, it wasn't overly hyped but the title and the synopsis really drew me too it. It also won an Edgar Award (same as Stephen Kings Mr Mercedes) which bumped it up a couple more notches on my TBR.
This book takes place in the 1800's, it revolves around Grace, a high born senators daughter. Sent to a Boston insane asylum when to her families shame becomes pregnant. Learning about other patients and the treatments of the time (which can be truly grotesque) was captivating and horrifying at the same time.
Our other protagonist is Dr Thornhallow, a lobotomy surgeon and a pioneer in the field of criminal science. Learning of Graces plight Thornhallow has her transfered to his asylum where she becomes his apprentice. The lines between sanity and madness are ever moving and only the discreet will remain free.
I Loved the writing, it was easy and beautiful. The beginning was amazing, creepy and compelling, I just couldn't put the book down. It was too bad the tone/feel of the book changed so much in the final 2/3's of the book.  I was thrilled to be reading a stand alone, for the first time in a while and I would read more from this author.
