This is the sequel novel to the Bone Collector which I was pretty obsessed with about a year ago. I was amazed when I picked this up at how much I remembered from the first book, Deaver also has this wonderful writing technique where he is dropping reminders and hints but it doesn't feel like he is, they are very seamlessly integrated into the story. That is one of my pet peeves just so everyone know is useless conversations/flashbacks specifically that put into a sequel or series as a refresher but it has nothing to do with the current story... Really hard to explain but I feel like people will just understand.. or they won't.
To the review, this was a fantastic read. Deaver jumps between the perspective of the "good guys" Lincoln and Amelia and the "bad guy" Billy Haven, I find it so unique to know who the killer is throughout the whole novel, but still to really have a mystery. It combines suspense and frustration in a way that makes the book hard to put down. Hard to explain this without spoilers but I liked the ending of the Bone Collector way better than the ending for this book - it was a great ending still but the mental differences between the Unsubs (theres my Criminal Minds showing) made all the difference to me. I was so interested and fascinated by the Bone Collector and his motives that he is a hard character to stand up to. I know that Deaver has written other novels that include Rhyme but I think the next read I pick up by him will be one of his stand alone novels.
